Getting Your Car Ready for Winter
Prepping Your Car for the Colder Months
1. Check your windshield wipers
When was the last time you had your windshield wipers replaced? Do they provide ample clarity of the road ahead when it rains? Clearing your windshield of snow and sleet is harder than clearing it of rain, so it’s important that you ensure your windshield wipers are ready. Also make sure to monitor your windshield washer fluid reservoir to confirm that it’s properly filled.
2. Check the tire pressure
During the colder season, your tires tend to lose air more quickly than usual, so checking your tire pressure should be a weekly task. If you see that the pressure is noticeably low , have it fixed right away. Properly inflated tires allow you to get better traction, which is necessary when the roads are coated in ice and snow.
3. Check your battery
Cold weather can cause corrosion around your battery terminals, so now’s the time to check them before it’s too late. It’s also a good idea to bring your car to a service center to test it and see if it will hold a charge. The last thing you want is to be stuck in a blizzard with a dead battery.
4. Get an oil change
Oil can thicken during the winter, and thick oil doesn’t adequately lubricate your engine. Before the temperature drops too low, bring your vehicle in for an oil change. The service center should ensure your car has oil that’s of the right viscosity to handle the winter.
5. Get your belts checked
Your vehicle’s engine belts can harden and even crack under cold weather. When you bring your car in for service, have the technicians take a look at your timing belts to make sure that they’re still working properly.
